Stage 4 Preview: The Climbers Take Centre Stage

Tuesday 1 & Wednesday 2 September

The inaugural SISU Punainen reaches a pivotal moment as the peloton tackles one of Watopia's toughest routes - Climber's Gambit.

By now, the race for the Punainen Jersey is beginning to take shape, but with three stages still to come, nothing is decided. Stage 4 presents another major opportunity for riders to attack the General Classification, while both the Sprintteri and Vuorikauris (Mountain Goat) competitions continue to gather momentum.

The stage features one sprint and two demanding climbing segments:

  • Sprint Segment: Sprint Forward

  • KQOM Segments: Titans Grove Reverse and Epic KOM Reverse

The early sprint offers the fast riders another chance to gain valuable seconds in the Sprintteri classification before the road turns upward. From there, the focus shifts firmly to the climbers, with two challenging ascents that are certain to test every rider's legs.

This is a stage where patience, positioning and pacing will be every bit as important as power.

Route Preview

Climber's Gambit is exactly what its name suggests—a route designed to tempt riders into attacking. The opening kilometres allow the bunch to settle before the race explodes on the climbs. The reverse ascent of Titans Grove KOM is punchy and demanding, while the legendary Epic KOM Reverse provides a sustained test of endurance where the strongest climbers can build significant gaps.

The combination of repeated climbing and accumulated fatigue makes this one of the most selective stages of the tour. Riders who overextend themselves early may find the final climb becomes a long ride into survival mode.

Coaching Tips

  • Don't burn all your matches early. There is a long way to go after the opening sprint. Ride within yourself and save energy for the decisive climbs.

  • Fight for position before every ascent. Entering the climbs near the front gives you the best chance of holding the lead group as the pace increases.

  • Climb smoothly. Focus on maintaining a consistent effort rather than responding to every acceleration. Steady pacing usually wins on longer climbs.

  • Recover whenever the gradient eases. Even a few seconds of recovery can make a big difference before the next effort.

  • Think about the overall tour. Every second gained—or lost—could prove decisive as the race heads towards its final mountain stages.

What to Watch

Stage 4 could prove to be one of the defining moments of the inaugural SISU Punainen. The General Classification riders will be looking to expose any weakness in their rivals, while the battle for the Vuorikauris Jersey continues with another two valuable climbing segments. The Sprintteri contenders also have an important opportunity before the mountains begin.

Will the riders in red strengthen their grip on the race, or will Climber's Gambit live up to its name and produce a bold move that changes the tour?

The climbs are getting longer. The attacks are getting stronger. The dream of wearing red is getting closer.

Let's go racing!
