Stage 3 Preview: Three Climbs. Three Chances to Make Your Move.
Saturday 29 August & Sunday 30 August
With the opening time trial completed and the first road stage introducing the Sprintteri and Vuorikauris competitions, the inaugural SISU Punainen enters the mountains.
Stage 3 takes riders onto Three Little Sisters in Watopia - a route built for climbers, puncheurs and riders willing to attack. As the name suggests, the course features three distinct climbing challenges, each offering riders another opportunity to shape the General Classification and the Mountain Goat standings.
This is a stage where the strongest legs can begin to separate themselves from the rest of the peloton.
The battle for the Vuorikauris (Mountain Goat) Jersey continues with three KQOM segments:
Zwift KOM Forward
Titans Grove KOM Forward
Volcano KOM Forward
With three climbs spread throughout the stage, consistency will be rewarded. Riders chasing the Mountain Goat classification can't afford to focus on just one ascent - every second counts. Meanwhile, the General Classification contenders will be looking to stay with the strongest climbers while avoiding costly time losses before the tour heads into even bigger mountain stages.
Route Preview
Three Little Sisters is one of Watopia's most balanced race routes, combining rolling roads with three very different climbs. Each ascent presents its own challenge, demanding repeated high-power efforts rather than one sustained climb. Riders who recover well between efforts and position themselves before each climb will have the greatest chance of success.
Expect the race to become increasingly selective as fatigue builds. Every climb provides an opportunity for attacks, and by the final ascent only the strongest riders may remain together.
Coaching Tips
Position before every climb. Enter each KOM near the front of the group to avoid losing contact when the pace lifts.
Ride your own effort. Don't chase every early attack. A controlled climb often delivers a faster overall time than blowing up halfway.
Recover on the descents. Use every downhill and flatter section to lower your heart rate, hydrate and prepare for the next climb.
Think beyond one climb. There are three Mountain Goat segments to contest. Save enough energy to remain competitive across all of them.
Stay focused to the finish. Riders often relax after the final climb, but valuable seconds can still be won—or lost—on the run home.
What to Watch
Stage 3 could be a defining day for the climbers. With three Mountain Goat segments on offer, the Vuorikauris Jerseybattle is set to intensify, while the General Classification contenders look to strengthen—or rescue—their position in the race for red.
Will the pure climbers take control of the tour? Can the Punainen Jersey survive another day? Or will a bold attack on one of the Three Little Sisters change the complexion of the inaugural SISU Punainen?
Three climbs. Three opportunities. One step closer to red.
Let's go racing!
