Role of a Mentor

An ideal SISU Academy mentor combines experience with empathy — someone who not only understands racing and performance, but also knows how to guide a young rider as a person. They communicate clearly and consistently, listen actively, and tailor their support to the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Strong mentors model the SISU values of resilience, accountability and humility, offering honest feedback while building confidence. They bring practical insight into training, racing and balance, helping riders navigate study, work and sport, and they create a safe, trusted environment where questions are encouraged and growth is expected. Above all, they are invested — showing up, following through, and genuinely caring about the long-term development of the rider both on and off the bike.

Role of a Rider

The role of a rider being mentored in the SISU Academy is to show up with intent, openness and accountability. This means taking ownership of their development, setting clear goals and being willing to listen, learn and apply feedback. A mentored rider should actively engage with their mentor, ask questions, reflect on performance and communicate honestly about challenges and progress. They are expected to bring discipline to their training, contribute positively to the team environment and embrace the SISU values of resilience and growth. Ultimately, the rider’s role is to maximise the opportunity — not just by improving performance, but by developing as a well-rounded person both on and off the bike.
